What it does
The Public Provident Fund is a government savings scheme in India with a 15-year term that can be extended in blocks of five years. Interest is compounded once a year. Depositing before the 5th of April earns interest for the whole year, which is what this calculator assumes. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
How to use it
- Enter how much you deposit each year, between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000.
- Check the interest rate and choose 15 years or an extension.
- Read the maturity value and the yearly table of deposits, interest and balance.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I withdraw before 15 years?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year, within limits, and loans against the balance are available in the earlier years. Closing the account early is allowed only in specific cases.
Why deposit before the 5th of April?
PPF interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. A deposit made by the 5th of April earns interest for all twelve months of the financial year.
