The Indonesian Rupiah (sign: Rp; code: IDR) is the official currency of Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation and fourth most populous country, issued by Bank Indonesia. Introduced in 1946 following independence from the Netherlands, the rupiah replaced the Dutch East Indies gulden. Indonesia's large and diverse economy, the largest in Southeast Asia, relies on commodities, manufacturing, and domestic consumption, and the rupiah experienced significant depreciation during the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis.
