The Indian Rupee (sign: ₹; code: INR) is the official currency of India, the world's most populous country and one of its fastest-growing major economies, issued by the Reserve Bank of India. The word "rupee" derives from the Sanskrit word "rūpya," meaning "wrought silver," and the currency has roots going back to the silver coin introduced by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. India adopted the decimal system for the rupee in 1957, and the currency's distinctive ₹ प्रतीक was officially adopted in 2010.
