Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. Where the month begins with the sighting of the new moon, the date can differ by one day: check with your local religious authority.

What it does

The Islamic calendar counts years from the Hijra of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina in 622 and has twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, so a year has 354 or 355 days and Ramadan comes about eleven days earlier every year. This converter uses Umm al-Qura, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, from the published table, and turns any date from 1945 to 2077 into its Hijri date and back. It also shows the month with the Hijri days, the main Islamic dates of the year and your age in Hijri years.

How to use it

  1. Pick a Gregorian date to see the Hijri date, in your language and in Arabic.
  2. Or choose a Hijri year, month and day to find the Gregorian date and the weekday.
  3. Enter your date of birth to see your age in the Islamic calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Ramadan start on a different date every year?
Because the Islamic year follows the Moon: twelve lunar months are about 354 days, eleven fewer than the solar year. Ramadan therefore moves through all the seasons in about 33 years.

Why can my country's date differ by one day?
Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance from astronomy. Many countries and communities start Ramadan and the Eids only after the new crescent has been seen, or use their own calculation, so their date can be one day later or earlier.

Why is my age higher in Hijri years?
Hijri years are about 11 days shorter, so in the same time more of them pass: about 103 Hijri years for every 100 Gregorian years. Someone aged 36 is already about 37 in the Islamic calendar.

What does AH mean?
Anno Hegirae, the year of the Hijra. In Arabic it is written with the letter هـ after the year, as in ١٤٤٨ هـ.

Why does the calendar start in 1945?
The published Umm al-Qura table goes back to 1924, but until 1945 it contains months of 28 and 31 days, which a lunar calendar cannot have. This converter uses the period without these irregularities. The dates were also compared day by day with two independent implementations.
