Ethiopian Birr
The Ethiopian Birr (sign: Br; code: ETB) is the official currency of Ethiopia, the second-most populous country in Africa, issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The word "birr" means "silver" in Amharic, and while earlier forms of the currency existed historically, the current birr was adopted in 1945 and has been reissued in various series since. Ethiopia's economy, one of Africa's fastest-growing, is largely agricultural, and the birr has undergone managed devaluations to support export competitiveness.
