The cubit is one of the oldest known units of length, originally based on the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. The English cubit was standardised at 18 inches (kira-kira 0.4572 metres), though ancient variants ranged from about 44 to 53 centimetres depending on civilisation. The cubit was fundamental to construction and trade in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and across the classical world, and appears throughout historical texts including the Hebrew Bible.
