A millennium is a period of 1,000 years, derived from the Latin mille (thousand) and annum (year). It is used in geology, archaeology, astronomy, and history to describe very long time spans. The transition from the second to the third millennium occurred at the start of the year 2001 by strict calendar reckoning.
