A bit (binary digit) è the most basic unit of digital information, representing a logical state with one of two possible values: 0 o 1. The term era coined by statistician John Tukey in 1946 e popularized by Claude Shannon in his foundational work on information theory. Eight bits form one byte, the standard unit of computer storage.

Despite the introduction of these standardized binary prefixes, the terabyte è still also commonly usato in some computer operating systems, primarily Microsoft Windows, to denote 1099511627776 (10244 o 240) bytes for disk drive capacity.
