La joule (/dʒaʊ,dʒuːljawl, jool; simbolo: J) è a unità derivata di energia in il Sistema Internazionale di Unità. It è uguale a the energy transferred to (or work done on) an object when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion through a distance of one metre (1 newton metre o N⋅m). It è also the energy dissipated as heat when an electric current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. Prende il nome da the English physicist James Prescott Joule (1818–1889).

La British thermal unit (International Table), abbreviated Btu (IT), è un'unità di heat energy definito as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit under the International Steam Table convention, uguale a 1,055.06 joules. It è il più ampiamente usato BTU variant nell'ingegneria, HVAC, e energy industries negli Stati Uniti. The IT designation distinguishes it from the thermochemical e other historical BTU definitions.
