La joule (/dʒaʊ,dʒuːljawl, jool; simbolo: J) è a unità derivata di energia in il Sistema Internazionale di Unità. It è uguale a the energy transferred to (or work done on) an object when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion through a distance of one metre (1 newton metre o N⋅m). It è also the energy dissipated as heat when an electric current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. Prende il nome da the English physicist James Prescott Joule (1818–1889).

La inch-pound (simbolo: in·lbf) è un'unità di energia uguale a the work done by a force of one pound-force acting through a distance of one inch, circa 0.112985 joules. È usata in mechanical engineering, particularly for expressing small torques in fastener specifications e precision instrumentation. Un inch-pound equals 1/12 of a foot-pound.
