È usata in X-ray physics, medical imaging, e atomic spectroscopy to describe the energies of X-ray photons e low-energy charged particles. Diagnostic X-rays typically hanno photon energies in the range of tens to hundreds of keV.

It è also the energy dissipated as heat when an electric current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. Prende il nome da the English physicist James Prescott Joule (1818–1889).
