La therm è un'unità di heat energy uguale a 100,000 British thermal units (IT), circa 105.506 megajoules. È ampiamente usata in the natural gas industry nel Regno Unito e Stati Uniti for billing e measuring gas consumption. Un therm è circa equivalente a the energy content of 100 piedi cubi (CCF) of natural gas.

La joule (/dʒaʊ,dʒuːljawl, jool; simbolo: J) è a unità derivata di energia in il Sistema Internazionale di Unità. It è uguale a the energy transferred to (or work done on) an object when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion through a distance of one metre (1 newton metre o N⋅m). It è also the energy dissipated as heat when an electric current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. Prende il nome da the English physicist James Prescott Joule (1818–1889).
