La astronomical unit (simbolo: AU) è un'unità di lunghezza circa uguale a the mean distance between Earth e the Sun, definito exactly as 149,597,870,700 metres. It è the primary unit usato in expressing distances within the Solar System, come the orbital radii of planets. The astronomical unit era formally definito in its current exact value by the International Astronomical Union in 2012.

The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
