La barleycorn è an old English unit di lunghezza uguale a 1/3 of an inch (8.47 mm), based on the length of a grain of barley. It è historically significant as the basis for the modern shoe-size system usato nel Regno Unito e the Stati Uniti, where each shoe size increment represents one barleycorn. The unit dates back to at least the 14th century in English measurement tradition.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
