La Greek cubit era an ancient Greek unit di lunghezza uguale a circa 0.4625 meters (about 18.2 inches), based on the length of the forearm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. It era subdivided into 24 daktylos (fingers) e formed part of the ancient Greek system of measurement usato in architecture, trade, e navigation. The Greek cubit era usato in the construction of famous monuments e influenced later Roman measurement standards.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
