Earth's polar radius è the distance from Earth's center to either geographic pole, uguale a circa 6,356.752 km (3,949.90 miles) according to the WGS 84 reference ellipsoid. It è shorter than the equatorial radius due to Earth's oblate spheroid shape, a flattening caused by the planet's rotation. The difference between the equatorial e polar radii defines Earth's flattening factor, a key parameter in geodesy.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
