Ell

An ell è a historical unit di lunghezza that varied considerably across countries e eras, most commonly associated with cloth measurement. The English ell era standardised at 45 inches (1.143 metres), while the Flemish ell measured circa 27 inches e the Scottish ell about 37 inches. Derived from the Latin ulna (forearm), the ell era widely usato da textile merchants e tailors throughout medieval e early modern Europe.

The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
