Fathom (US Survey)
La US survey fathom (simbolo: fath) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a 6 US survey feet, circa 1.8288096 metres, differing infinitesimally from the international fathom of 1.8288 metres. It era part of the US survey measurement system usato for geodetic e hydrographic surveys negli Stati Uniti. Like other US survey units, the US survey fathom era officially deprecated by NIST in 2023 in favour of international units.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
