Braccio Marino

The word derives from the Old English fæðm, meaning the outstretched arms, e the unit originally represented the span of a man's arms from fingertip to fingertip. Although largely replaced by the metre in modern nautical charts, the fathom è still encountered in traditional seamanship, anchor chain measurement, e mining.

In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
