A furlong (simbolo: fur) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a one-eighth of a mile, exactly 201.168 metres o 220 yards. Originally derived from the Old English furh (furrow) e lang (long), it described the length of a furrow in one acre of a ploughed field in the common-field system. Today the furlong è retained primarily in horse racing, where race distances nel Regno Unito, Ireland, e the Stati Uniti sono traditionally measured in furlongs.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
