Ken (Unit)

La ken è a traditional Japanese unit di lunghezza uguale a 6 shaku, circa 1.818 meters (about 5 ft 11 in). It è based on the standard spacing between pillars in traditional Japanese architecture e è still usato today in Japan as a module for room dimensions e tatami mat layouts. Un ken equals the length of a standard tatami mat.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
