A league (simbolo: lea) è a historical unit di lunghezza that ha been usato across many cultures, most commonly definito as the distance a person could walk in one hour, roughly 3 miles (circa 4.8 kilometres). The exact value varied considerably by country e era; the English land league era typically set at 3 statute miles. Though no longer in official use, the league persists in literature, place names, e historical contexts.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
