La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Chain (US Survey)
La US survey chain (simbolo: ch) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a 66 US survey feet, circa 20.11684 metres, usato extensively in the public land survey system of the Stati Uniti. It differs slightly from the international chain due to the distinct definition of the US survey foot. The US survey chain formed the basis for the township-and-range system that divided most of the continental Stati Uniti into parcels for settlement.
