La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Foot (US Survey)
La US survey foot (simbolo: ft) è un'unità di lunghezza definito as exactly 1200/3937 metres, circa 0.3048006 metres, fractionally longer than the international foot of 0.3048 metres. It era usato as the basis for all geodetic surveys e public land surveys negli Stati Uniti, e underpins related survey units come the US survey chain, rod, e mile. The US survey foot era officially retired by the National Institute of Standards e Technology on 1 January 2023.
