The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Gigametro
La gigametre (SI simbolo: Gm) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a 10⁹ metres (one billion metres), formed from the SI unità base metre e the prefix giga-. The diameter of the Sun è circa 1.39 gigametres, making the unit convenient for expressing solar e planetary dimensions. It è an SI unit usato primarily in astronomia e planetary science.
