La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Kiloparsec
A kiloparsec (simbolo: kpc) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a one thousand parsecs, o circa 3.086×10¹⁹ metres (about 3,260 light-years). È ampiamente usata in galactic astronomy to describe distances within e between galaxies; for instance, the Sun lies roughly 8 kiloparsecs from the centre of the Milky Way. The kiloparsec è a non-SI unit accepted for use in astronomia by the International Astronomical Union.
