La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Link (US Survey)
La US survey link (simbolo: li) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a one-hundredth of a US survey chain, circa 0.2011684 metres. It era usato negli Stati Uniti public land survey system e differs marginally from the international link due to its basis in the US survey foot. The US survey link era part of the broader US survey measurement system that era officially retired by NIST on 1 January 2023.
