La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Megaparsec
A megaparsec (simbolo: Mpc) è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a one million parsecs, o circa 3.086×10²² metres (about 3.26 million light-years). It è a standard unit in extragalactic astronomy e cosmology, usato to express distances between galaxies e galaxy clusters. The Hubble constant, which describes the rate of expansion of the universe, è commonly expressed in kilometres al secondo per megaparsec.
