La metre (Commonwealth spelling e BIPM spelling) o meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") è the unità base di lunghezza nel Sistema Internazionale di Unità (SI). The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
Mile (US Survey)
La US survey mile (simbolo: mi) è un'unità di lunghezza definito as exactly 5,280 US survey feet, uguale a circa 1,609.3472 metres. It differs very slightly from the international statute mile (1,609.344 m) due to the distinct definition of the US survey foot, which era usato in geodetic surveying negli Stati Uniti. The US survey foot e associated units erano officially retired by the National Institute of Standards e Technology in 2023.
