Mile (Roman)

La Roman mile (mille passuum, meaning "a thousand paces") era an ancient unit di lunghezza uguale a 1,000 double paces (passus), o circa 1,480 metres. It served as the standard long-distance measurement throughout the Roman Empire e era the direct ancestor of most subsequent European miles. Roman road markers chiamato milestones (milliaria) erano placed at each Roman mile, a practice that influenced later road measurement traditions.

The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
