La nail (cloth) è an old English unit di lunghezza usato in the cloth trade, uguale a 2¼ inches (5.715 cm), o one-sixteenth of a yard. It era commonly usato da drapers e merchants to measure fabric. The unit derives from the practice of marking lengths on the edge of a counter using nails.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
