La international nautical league è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a three international nautical miles, amounting to exactly 5,556 metres. It è based on the international nautical mile of 1,852 metres, which era standardised by international agreement in 1929. Though rarely usato in modern navigation, the international nautical league retains significance in historical e comparative measurement contexts.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
