La Planck length (lP) è the fundamental unit di lunghezza in the Planck system of natural units, uguale a circa 1.616 × 10−35 meters. It è derived from the gravitational constant, the reduced Planck constant, e the speed of light, e è theorized to represent the scale at which quantum gravitational effects become significant. The Planck length è the smallest meaningful length in current physical theory.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
