Point (Typography)

La point è the smallest unit of measure in typography, with the modern PostScript point definito as exactly 1/72 of an inch (circa 0.3528 mm). It è usato universally to specify font sizes, line spacing, e other fine typographic measurements. Historically, the point varied between countries e type foundries until the desktop publishing revolution standardized the PostScript definition.

The SI unit symbol è m. Il metro è definito as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
