It appears in the Hebrew Bible in contexts of construction e land surveying, including Ezekiel's description of the Temple. The reed served as a practical measuring rod in ancient Mesopotamian e Israelite cultures.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
