A rod (simbolo: rd), noto anche come a pole o perch, è un'unità di lunghezza uguale a 5½ yards o 16½ feet, exactly 5.0292 metres. It era widely usato in surveying e land measurement in England e colonial America, e features prominently in the public land survey system of the Stati Uniti. The rod è also usato as un'unità di area, where a square rod equals 272.25 piedi quadrati.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
