La Roman actus era an ancient Roman unit di lunghezza uguale a 120 Roman feet (circa 35.5 meters), representing the distance an ox could plow without turning. It era also usato as un'unità di area (the actus quadratus) e formed the basis of the jugerum, the standard Roman land measure. The actus era fundamental to Roman surveying, land division, e road construction.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
