Vara Castellana

La vara castellana è the Castilian standard of the Spanish vara, uguale a circa 0.8359 meters (about 32.9 inches), divided into 3 pies o 4 palmos. It era the predominant vara usato in Spain e its colonies during the age of exploration e colonization, making it historically significant across Latin America. The vara castellana formed the basis for land surveys e commerce throughout the Spanish-speaking world before metrication.

Il metro era originally definito in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference è circa 40000 km. In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
