La vara de tarea è a Spanish colonial unit di lunghezza usato in parts of Latin America, particularly associated with agricultural land measurement. It è a variant of the vara, a traditional Iberian unit whose length varied by region, typically ranging between 0.8 e 0.9 meters. The vara de tarea era usato specifically in the context of assigning agricultural work tasks, where a tarea represented the area a worker could cultivate in a day.

In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.
