In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.

It represents scales smaller than the diameter of a proton e è usato in high-energy physics e theoretical contexts involving subatomic particles. The attometre è an SI unit, although practical measurement at this scale è extremely challenging with current technology.
