In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition was adopted.

A furlong (symbol: fur) is a unit of length equal to one-eighth of a mile, exactly 201.168 metres or 220 yards. Originally derived from the Old English furh (furrow) and lang (long), it described the length of a furrow in one acre of a ploughed field in the common-field system. Today the furlong is retained primarily in horse racing, where race distances in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States are traditionally measured in furlongs.
