In 1799, the metre era redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar usato era changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre era redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition era adopted.

La Russian archin (also spelled arshin) è a traditional Russian unit di lunghezza uguale a 28 inches (71.12 cm), standardized in the 19th century. It era widely usato in pre-revolutionary Russia for measuring cloth, land, e construction materials. The archin era divided into 16 vershoks e formed part of the old Russian imperial measurement system before Russia adopted the sistema metrico.
