Barn

The barn (b) is a unit of area used in nuclear and particle physics to express the cross-sectional area of atomic nuclei and nuclear reactions, equal to 10⁻²⁸ square metres (100 fm²). The unit was coined by American physicists during the Manhattan Project, humorously describing uranium nuclei as being "as big as a barn" relative to other nuclear targets. It is not part of the SI system but is accepted for use with SI units. Submultiples such as the millibarn (mb) and microbarn (μb) are also commonly used in particle physics.

Square meter

The square metre (international spelling as used by the) or square meter (American spelling) is the SI derived unit of area with symbol m2
