Section
A section is a unit of land area in the United States Public Land Survey System (PLSS), equal to one square mile or 640 acres, approximately 2.590 km². Each township in the PLSS is divided into 36 sections, numbered from 1 to 36 in a specific boustrophedonic pattern. Sections can be further subdivided into half-sections, quarter-sections, and smaller aliquot parts for legal land description. The section is the fundamental unit of land ownership description in the western United States.
