Character Counter
Free character counter: characters with and without spaces, words, lines, size in bytes and how many SMS messages your text takes, updated as you type.
What it does
Every character counts, including spaces, line breaks, punctuation and emoji; an emoji counts as one character, as people see it. The size in bytes is what the text takes in UTF-8, the encoding of the web. The SMS counter follows the GSM standard: 160 characters fit in one message, or 153 per part when the text is split, and some symbols such as € and [ ] take two.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text in the box.
- Read the characters with and without spaces, the words and the lines.
- Check the SMS panel to see how many messages the text will be split into and which characters force Unicode.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, in almost every limit: titles, posts, forms and SMS all count spaces. That is why both numbers are shown, with and without spaces.
Why does one accent cut my SMS to 70 characters?
The GSM alphabet has only some accented letters, such as é, ñ and ü. A letter outside it, such as ç, ã or á, or any emoji, makes the phone send the whole message in Unicode, which fits 70 characters, or 67 per part.
Why is the size in bytes larger than the number of characters?
In UTF-8 a basic Latin letter takes 1 byte, an accented letter 2, a Chinese or Japanese character 3 and an emoji 4. Database fields and some systems limit bytes, not characters.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting runs in your browser, so the text never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
