What it does
A fixed deposit (FD) locks an amount with a bank for a set tenure at a fixed rate. Indian banks usually compound FD interest every quarter and pay simple interest on deposits of less than six months. The maturity amount is what you get back at the end: the deposit plus all the interest.
How to use it
- Enter the deposit amount and the interest rate your bank offers.
- Enter the tenure in years, months and days, and keep quarterly compounding unless your bank says otherwise.
- Read the maturity amount, the interest earned and the effective yearly yield.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and the bank deducts TDS when the interest for the year passes a threshold. The amounts shown here are before tax.
Do senior citizens get a higher rate?
Most banks add about 0.25 to 0.50 percentage points for senior citizens. Enter the rate your bank quotes for you.
