Step by step

    What it does

Type two fractions, choose the operation and read the result as a simplified fraction, a mixed number, a decimal and a percent. You can type proper fractions (3/4), improper fractions (7/4), mixed numbers (1 3/4), negative numbers and decimals. The calculation is exact: 0.1 + 0.2 gives exactly 3/10, and repeating decimals are shown with a bar over the digits that repeat.

    How to use it

    1. Type the first fraction, for example 3/4 or 1 1/2.
    2. Choose add, subtract, multiply or divide, and type the second fraction.
    3. Read the simplified answer and follow the steps to see how it was found.

The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator, rewrite each fraction with it, then add the numerators. For 1/2 + 1/3 the common denominator is 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

    How do you divide fractions?
    Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second, the second fraction turned upside down. So 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 3/2 × 4/3 = 12/6 = 2.

    What is a mixed number?
A whole number and a proper fraction together, such as 2 1/3. To turn it into an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 2 1/3 = 7/3.

Why does a negative mixed number apply the sign to the whole number?
Because −2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3), which is −7/3, not −2 + 1/3. This calculator reads it that way, as textbooks do.
