What it does
A weighted average gives each grade the importance its weight says: a final exam worth 60% moves your average three times as much as a test worth 20%. The calculator adds each grade times its weight and divides by the total weight, so weights that do not add up to 100 still work. It also answers the question that usually comes next: given the grades you already have, what you need on the rest to finish with the grade you want. Grading scales differ from country to country, and some run backwards (in Germany 1 is the best grade and 6 the worst), so choose yours above and the calculator follows it.
How to use it
- Choose your grading scale. It starts on the one most used where you are.
- Type each grade and its weight. Empty rows are ignored, so you can leave a row for an exam you have not taken yet.
- Below, say how much what is left is worth and the final grade you want, and read the grade you need.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted average calculated?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add those up, and divide by the sum of the weights. With 6 worth 40% and 9 worth 60%: (6 × 40 + 9 × 60) ÷ 100 = 7.8. A simple average of the same two would be 7.5; the difference is the weight.
Do the weights have to add up to 100?
No. Only the proportion between them matters, so weights of 1 and 3 give the same result as 25% and 75%. If they add up to less than 100, the calculator assumes the rest is still to come and fills in the weight of what is left for you.
How is the grade I need on the final worked out?
If what is left is worth a share r of the final grade, your final grade will be your current average × (1 − r) plus the exam grade × r. The calculator solves that for the exam grade. When the answer is beyond the best grade on the scale, the target cannot be reached; when even the worst grade is enough, it is already secured.
Why does my country's scale look different?
Because there is no single one. Brazil and Spain grade from 0 to 10, Portugal and France from 0 to 20, Chile from 1 to 7, Colombia from 0 to 5, and Germany from 1 to 6 with 1 as the best. If yours is not in the list, choose Other scale and type the best and worst grades; a scale where the lower number is better works too.
Can I use letter grades such as A or B+?
Not directly. What a letter is worth changes from school to school (an A can mean 90 and above, or 93 and above), so converting it here would be a guess. Use the percentage or points your teacher gave, or the value your school's table assigns to each letter.
