What it does
A cup measures volume, not weight, so how many grams fit in it depends on the ingredient: a cup of flour weighs 125 g, a cup of sugar 200 g and a cup of honey 339 g. This converter uses the gram weights the USDA publishes for each ingredient and works both ways, from cups, spoons, sticks and milliliters to grams and ounces, or from grams back to cups and spoons.
How to use it
- Choose the ingredient from the list.
- Type the amount, such as 1 1/2 or 3/4, and pick the measure: US, metric or Japanese cup, spoon, stick or milliliters.
- Read the weight in grams and ounces, or switch to grams → cups to go the other way.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup?
It depends on the ingredient. A US cup holds 236.6 mL, which is 237 g of water but only 125 g of all-purpose flour, 200 g of sugar, 227 g of butter and 244 g of milk. Light, airy ingredients such as oats (81 g) weigh far less than dense ones such as honey (339 g).
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. The US cup is 236.6 mL, the metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada is 250 mL, about 6% more, and the Japanese cup is 200 mL. A Brazilian measuring cup is usually 240 mL. Pick the cup your recipe was written for.
How do I measure flour without a scale?
Stir the flour to loosen it, spoon it into the measuring cup until it overflows and level it with the back of a knife. Do not tap the cup or scoop it from the bag: packed flour can weigh 150 g a cup or more instead of 125 g.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
A US cup holds 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons, and one tablespoon is 3 teaspoons. So a tablespoon of flour weighs about 7.8 g, of sugar 12.5 g and of butter 14.2 g. Australian tablespoons are larger, 20 mL instead of about 15 mL.
