The metre (Commonwealth spelling and BIPM spelling) or meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). The metre was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximately 40000 km. In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition was adopted.
Chain
The chain (symbol: ch), also known as Gunter's chain, is a unit of length equal to 66 feet, 22 yards, or exactly 20.1168 metres. It was invented by the English mathematician Edmund Gunter in the early 17th century for land survey purposes and conveniently divides into 100 links. The chain remains legally significant in land records in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries that inherited English surveying traditions.
